What Are the Lens Materials?

Common lens materials include the following types:
  • Glass Lenses: One of the earliest materials used in optical equipment, they boast advantages such as high optical performance, high hardness, high wear resistance, and high stability. They can provide clear and sharp images and are not easily affected by temperature and humidity. However, their heavy weight, fragility, and high processing difficulty have limited their application scope.

  • Resin Lenses: Also known as plastic lenses, they are lightweight, flexible, cost-effective, and have good impact resistance, making them not easy to break. Nevertheless, they have low hardness, are prone to scratches, may deform on the surface after long-term use, and are relatively sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity.

  • High-Index Plastic Lenses: A special type of resin lens, their refractive index is increased by adding specific additives. They can ensure a thinner lens thickness while achieving a wider field of view and better optical performance, making them suitable for patients with high myopia or hyperopia. However, they have a higher cost and also suffer from the problems of being easy to scratch and having unstable optical performance.

  • Polycarbonate (PC) Lenses: They have extremely high impact resistance and can withstand strong impacts and collisions, so they are widely used in sports glasses, safety glasses, and other fields. Additionally, they have good UV resistance. But their hardness is low, making them easy to scratch, and they are sensitive to temperature changes.

  • Nylon Lenses: A lightweight and high-toughness lens material, they have excellent impact resistance and scratch resistance, and can maintain good optical performance in harsh environments. They also have good light transmittance and UV resistance, making them suitable for outdoor activities and sports glasses. However, they have a high cost and are sensitive to humidity changes.

  • Crystal Lenses: Made from quartz crystals as raw materials, they have extremely high hardness and wear resistance, as well as excellent thermal stability and optical performance. But their cost is very high, processing is difficult, and they are relatively heavy, which limits their application.
